Facing Irrational Fears

Tiger or Lizzard is an art print exploring the strange power of irrational fear, and how easily something harmless can become a monster in our minds. I created this illustration during an artist residency in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, after a rather unexpected visitor found its way into my room: a large lizzard. At first, the lizzard felt like something to be afraid of. But the more I observed him, the more I realised that he was probably far more afraid of me than I was of him. What began as an unsettling encounter eventually became a small friendship.

I named him Rufi, because he was always hanging out on the roof above my toilet. The work became a metaphor for the unnecessary fears we encounter in everyday life, the things we turn into monsters simply because we don't understand them, or because our minds tell us to be afraid.
